There are three points that shape this analysis:
The first is the focus on themes of continuity and discontinuity in seeking to under stand historical moments.Some analysis emphasize that the vote in Parliament on March 1, 2003, when Turkey refused to cooperate with the US on Iraq' was an inportant turning point in Turkish - Ameriican relations. In fact, although it camme as a shock to everyone inside and outside Turkey, it was not really a total, unimaginable surprise.
The second is that in Turkish-American relations, there are always periods of mis-communications: the Americans do not quite understand the Turks, and thr Turrks do not quite understand the Americans. most the time.
The third is that one can periodize the history of Turkish-US relations according to decades. The nineteen forties, especially, and perhaps each of the sussequent decades, reflect changes in the international enviroment, which have made the
evolution of Turkish-American relations more comprehensible...
