מתי אדם קם בלילות

מתי קם אדם בלילות
ומהרהר מה עשׂה באחוזת לבו,
מה יצר מהריונות עמלו,
ואביו ואמו עזבוהו מזמן לאנחות השעה
וכבר אין במותניו אותה עיסה למצוות
גופו עקה גדולה מתעתעת באיבריו
ואין מסיכה רצופה לחלבוני התאים ברוחו הסדוקה
רק ידו נשארת בחוכמתהּ
חובק בהּ והולך.

       مَتَى يَنْهَضُ الإنْسَانُ فِي اللَّيِالِي

مَتَى يَنْهَضُ الإنْسَانُ فِي اللّيالِي

وَيَتَأمّلُ مَاذَا فَعَلَ بَمُستَوطَناتِ قَلبِهِ

وَمَاذَا أَنْتجَ مِن حَمْلِ كَدْحِهِ

وَقْد تَركَهُ أَبُوهُ وَأُمُهُ مُنْذُ حِينٍ لآهاتِ الحاضِرِ

وَمَا عَادَ يَملِكُ فِي صُلْبِهِ خَمِيرةَ الفَرائضِ تِلْكَ

جِسمُهُ وَطْأة ثقيلةٌ تَعبَتْ بِأَعْضائِه

وَمَا مِنْ صَقْلٍ مُتَواصِلٍ لِزّلالِ الخّلايا فِي رُوحِه المَصْدُوعَةِ

يَدُه وَحْدَهَا ظلّتْ عَلى حِكْمَتِهَا

يَحْتضِنُها وَيَسِيرُ .

When does a man awaken at night

and consider what he has done with his heart’s property

what he has created from the pregnancies of his toil,

and his father and his mother have left him long ago to the sighs of the hour

and there is no longer the same pressure for commandments in his loins

his body a great pressure deluding his limbs

and there is no ointment imbued for the protein of the cells of his cracked spirit
