Early in the twentieth century wealty families began to send their children abroad for higher education. Beginning in 1926 about one handred students a year were selected to study in Europe and the United States at government expense. After Warld war II this trickle of official students was swelled by a flood of those going abroad on private means. In 1972 there were some 21.000 students abroad.
